Sealing the WindFloat Atlantic project

Roxtec cable and pipe transits cover all needs.

Principle Power specified Roxtec sealing solutions for their floating offshore wind foundation design for the WindFloat Atlantic project in Portugal. Global frontrunners within renewable power generation benefit from the Roxtec sealing expertise.

Flexibility and efficiency

Principle Power is seeking a balance between standardization and customization across products to seal various penetrations into the hull. Solutions need to cover low-voltage, high-voltage, and fiber optic cables, cables in multicore or trefoil formation, and cables with varying bending radius and thickness, entering columns or passing through steel bulkheads.

Roxtec offers flexible and efficient sealing solutions for these applications and Principle Power found these to be the right match for the WindFloat Atlantic project.

“Roxtec is among the internationally recognized sealing specialists, with track-record and experience in the oil and gas industry that can be adapted to the floating wind sector,” says Seth Price, Vice President of Technology and Innovation for Principle Power.

Useful design software

The collaboration between Roxtec and Principle Power led to a standardized solution that was flexible enough to meet individual needs of each cable within the same penetration. These solutions were successfully implemented in the WindFloat Atlantic project, providing Principle Power with a library of options ready for deployment. Principle Power consulted the Roxtec Transit Designer™ software to specify the various seals, considering the cable properties and required protection for each penetration.

Eyes on commercial scale

“We have been laser-focused on every detail of our technology to ensure quality, fabrication efficiency, and reliability. Applying standardized solutions that are readily available in the industry, like Roxtec seals, has proven to be successful for WindFloat Atlantic. This type of solution will be instrumental for upcoming projects as we optimize technology for commercial scale and aim to deliver reliable cost-competitive solutions to project developers,” says Seth Price.

Seth Price concludes that “as the industry advances to large scale deployment, it is important to provide operational feedback on seal performance from these early-stage projects in order to optimize sealing solution designs for the challenges unique to the floating wind industry.”
