Roxtec contributes to safety and operational reliability in OL1, OL2 and OL3 on the nuclear island Olkiluoto. The plant is expected to produce 30 percent of the electricity in Finland.

Roxtec contributes to safety in OL1, OL2 and OL3

The new OL3 is a European pressurized water reactor, designed by AREVA and Siemens, with an electrical output of 1600 MW. The older power plant units OL1 and OL2 are 890 megawatt boiling water reactors. The facilities are owned and operated by Finnish nuclear power company TVO.

Multi-hazard protection

The nuclear power plant is expected to function even after the impact of, for example, a large jet crash and requires protection against multiple concurrent and consequential hazards. Numerous safety systems and cable tunnels must be protected from the risk of fire, explosion, arc-flash, blast load, and flooding. There is also a need for protection against electromagnetic interferences and pulses. Therefore, TVO is using Roxtec sealing modules for electromagnetic shielding in the reactor building outer wall.

“Roxtec is an excellent product that we can use for many of our requirements,” says Civil Engineer Arto Paavilainen of the TVO technical department.

Appreciated cable seals  

The video also features two other TVO experts on nuclear safety: Teemu Tenlén, who was born on the island and is working as installation manager for EIC modifications, and Mika Laiho, a former shipyard worker who introduced Roxtec to TVO, and now a foreman within electrical maintenance. Roxtec multi-cable transits are appreciated by the maintenance group. The team has benefitted from the installation training provided by Roxtec. Why do they prefer Roxtec seals? Mika Laiho says:  

“The answer is simple. It is the easiest way to make a very good sealing for the cable penetration.”

Efficient seals for upgrades 

It is important to be able to perform frequent upgrades with additional cables in a safe and easy way. Roxtec is specified for OL3, and the blue sealing modules are also used in OL1 and OL2. As those plants were built in the 1970s, they are being modified for extended lifetime. Thanks to the Roxtec flexibility, TVO saves time and reduces waste. The sealing modules adapt to cables of many sizes, so the installers manage their work with few components – and minimal storage and waste.
