Ö-varvet in Gothenburg, Sweden, performs lifetime extension services on composite boats of the Swedish Coast Guard. They take the opportunity to replace cable and pipe penetration frames in steel and aluminum with lightweight yet very strong transit frames and sleeves in glass-reinforced polyester.
“This is a very good solution. Before, we had to install aluminum frames with flanges for bolting. Now we can reduce the space for mounting and still enter a larger frame for more cables into the composite structure. It becomes solid and strong,” says Daniel Olofsson, Project Manager at Ö-varvet.
The shipyard workers at Ö-varvet have been using Roxtec bolted cable and pipe transits with success for many years. When Roxtec came up with frames and sleeves in glass-reinforced polyester for lamination into fiberglass and composite hulls, things got even better. The reason is that Ö-varvet desired lighter solutions and wanted to avoid bolting in the very small space available onboard.
Strengthening the structure
Ö-varvet has decided to specify Roxtec SRC GRP multi-cable transits with rounded corners for the Madera ribs of the Swedish Coast Guard. The seals are used to ensure fire rated and watertight bulkhead penetrations for power cables running between the battery package, the engine room, and the technical room. The rounded corners reduce stress concentration and the risk of cracks.
“We could lift the entire boat by the existing frame. That is how strong it is,” says Daniel Olofsson.
Useful for many applications
In addition to this, Ö-varvet is using Roxtec SL GRP sleeves with Roxtec RS seals for single signal cables and radar and antenna cables from the steering cabin and up to the roof and out on deck.
For Ö-varvet, the lightweight products in composite make a real difference. They can avoid bolting metallic cable and pipe penetration frames into the composite hull and still be sure to maintain a strong and solid structure. They see further application areas in other boats and vessels going forward. And the experienced installers can continue to ensure safety by using Roxtec solutions.
