The geolocation feature in the Roxtec Software Suite™ enables users to identify and track the location of each seal in an asset or a system. Interconnection specialist James Jun and his team at TOWARDEX in Somerville, USA, is using it as a constantly updated source of truth for asset management.
TOWARDEX is the owner and manager of a multi-tenant utility infrastructure for data centers and wireless telecom networks. It is a network of underground fiber optic cable vaults used by different companies and where the cable and conduit penetrations are sealed from water ingress and gas with Roxtec seals. TOWARDEX is responsible for maintaining the infrastructure and managing the placement of fiber optic cables. They must be able to access vaults and manholes frequently. Fortunately, all multi-cable transits are registered in the Roxtec software and can be easily located.
“The feature helps us avoid the common problem of outdated records, as seen with traditional Excel or paper-based methods,” says James Jun. “By using real-time updates, our team can maintain accuracy and operational efficiency, preventing leaks and ensuring all conduits are properly sealed.”
Planning and upgrades made easy
The software simplifies planning and the execution of new projects by providing detailed information about the transits. The team uses a mobile app to scan QR codes onsite and immediately update the system with the status of the seals. Changes are logged to facilitate maintenance. The new feature makes it easy to direct new team members to specific locations where inspection is needed.
“The QR code is a lifesaver. We know exactly when and where someone needs to address an issue.”
Practical transit activity log
“The biggest benefit is the geolocation feature,” says James Jun. “With the software suite, I can plan every update from the office and direct my team to the right location with the right information needed for the job at hand. The mobile software allows you to work offline and just pick up a seal, make sure it corresponds to the actual entry right on the phone and update it. That is a very good feature for us and our installers because it gives us a transit log.”
When out working in the field, the team has a specific time window. They must issue a permit to be allowed to be out on the road and have police officers to block the street and direct the traffic for protection of the public. Everyone is in a hurry to get out of there within the limited time window.
Ensuring safety and quality
Installing new technology in a vault must therefore be a well-prepared and scheduled event. The team needed something automatic to help them remember, and for quick follow-up. Thanks to the software, the inspector can now quickly go down and check before the team closes the manhole.
“The number one thing is that the software allows us to follow up every time we are out there working in the manholes. We keep track of all openings and do not miss any opportunity for maintenance or inspection. We save time as we do not end up with a leakage that we cannot locate.”
