How to seal and shield cable entries for bridge decks

Save time and space with innovative marine-grade multi-cable transits.

Whether you design or install cable penetration seals on the bridge deck of commercial vessels, you struggle with the typical challenges: lack of space, high cable density – and an absolute need for watertightness and electromagnetic shielding. Let us present a solution for fast installation.

The bridge and bridge wings of tankers, container ships and LPG, LNG and bulk carriers house navigational, steering, radar and communication equipment as well as controls to engines and thrusters. All this electronic equipment must fit into the semi-circular console unit design, and it needs to be protected against different risk factors. It can, however, be hard to pull and properly seal all the different cables needed for power and control. There is hardly any free space under panels and electrical cabinets, and when all is done there is a late change requiring another cable…

Shipyards that simply have had enough of issues with cable sealing on the bridge now make room for Roxtec sealing solutions in their shipyard standard. Roxtec provides innovative cable and pipe transits that help designers and installers avoid fire and water leakage, manage high cable density and be prepared for any modifications. On the bridge, many shipbuilders prefer installing Roxtec S ES solutions.

Multi-protection against EMI/EMP, fire, gas, and water for bridge deck electrical systems

Roxtec S ES is a mechanical multi-cable and pipe transit ensuring electromagnetic compatibility as well as protection against multiple risks. The modular-based entry seal can be used in EMC sensitive areas to provide potential equalization and electromagnetic shielding against EMI, electromagnetic interference, and EMP, electromagnetic pulse. Besides this, the transit is Class A fire rated to IMO 2010 FTP Code. You might not need it all on the bridge, but it is in fact also gas-tight to 2.5 bar catastrophic pressure, watertight to 4 bar catastrophic pressure and IP 66/67 rated.

Handle changes during construction with modular cable entries for bridge decks

The Roxtec S ES transit is easy to install and extremely area efficient as it enables routing and sealing of multiple cables in one small opening also where there is very little space to work in. It is ready for use immediately after installation. It can be prepared with spare modules to provide built-in spare capacity for sudden design changes during construction. When all modules are already in place, there is no need for drilling new holes. In short, the Roxtec S ES is invented for fast and flexible installation, lower cost and better utilization of the space onboard.

Very flexible cable entry solutions

The sealing modules are adaptable to accommodate cables and pipes of different sizes which helps installers in the field handle any surprises regarding service sizes. It is easy to inspect and verify the installation quality visually, and there are Roxtec EC (electrical continuity) test sticks available to help indicate the electrical performance of the bridge deck entry installation. There are also further space saving versions for handling hard angle installations and versions for ensuring a certain elevation from the deck to avoid the risk of submerging.

Bolted high-performance sealing solution for fiber optic cables

If there is a need for routing non-metallic fiber optic cables into a shielded enclosure on the bridge, and you want to avoid welding, you can use the bolted Roxtec Waveguide Seal ES. It protects from electromagnetic threats such as EMP and HEMP, as well as from fire, gas, and water ingress. It is based on a waveguide technique, offering minimum 100dB shielding effectiveness.

Reduction of fire insulation with Roxtec seals

By using Roxtec cable seals for bridge decks on tankers, container ships and LPG, LNG and bulk carriers, shipyards can save a lot of time and money thanks to the reduced need for fire insulation. Roxtec provides fire-resistant seals that do not require any insulation for A-0 applications and no extra insulation for A-60 applications. Roxtec registered product certificates speak for themselves. There are more than 300 of them, issued by major classification societies, including DNV, ABS, LR, CCS and KRS. They show that the durable and corrosion-resistant seals meet all relevant standards within shipbuilding and protect against fire, gas, water ingress, shockwaves, vibration and material fatigue.

Technical support in the yard during bridge construction

In addition to efficient cable sealing solutions for the bridge that meet all requirements of today and tomorrow, Roxtec provides local technical specialist support online and onsite, installation training in the field, and installation tools. The complete sealing solution provider has also developed a suite of software that simplifies design, engineering and the installation process as well as the set up and maintenance of a mandatory class compliant cable transit seal systems register. The Roxtec Transit Build™ software in the suite is especially developed for shipyards searching for efficiency through digitalization. It helps you monitor the installation work during bridge construction, meet class requirements regarding watertight cable transits and hand over an approved register and inspection report to the owner.

Roxtec has extensive resources for product development, pre-certification testing and preparation of customized sealing solutions to help shipyards overcome specific challenges on, for example, the bridge deck. With global coverage, strong local presence, and regional distribution centers and local warehouses strategically located, Roxtec can always offer technical support and swift deliveries.
